DID YOU KNOW… Nonprofits employs 12.3 million people and the sector’s payroll ($826 billion!) exceeding those of most other US industries, including construction, transportation and finance! Yes, FINANCE! YOU – and other mission-driven workers — pay taxes on salaries, sales taxes on purchases, and property taxes, which is another significant contribution to the US economy. Nonprofit organizations that provide care for children and the elderly enable family members to work outside the home.

Overhead tells the world absolutely nothing about who you are and what you’re accomplishing. It’s simply some weird administrative number (for which there is no formula, so there’s that…!) that we’ve somehow allowed to convey the value of the work we do. Uh, NO. Whether you are Apple, Google, Nike, or a mission-driven organization business, you need infrastructure to operate.

We’ve allowed philanthropy to become primarily about counting dollars and donors. While Transactional Philanthropy is certainly one way to go about fundraising, it’s not going to reap the maximum return or benefits. The word philanthropy is derived from the Greek word for “love of man.” How do you express love – to your clients, to your colleagues, to your board and other volunteers? And how good are you (and others at your organization) at receiving the love you’re your donors, volunteers and other supporters are trying to express? Listen to this episode to find out!!
